A turning point in his life

A letter from Robert Holtzmann to Harry Bresslau, 11.02.1919

Harry Bresslau had lived with his family in Strasbourg for 28 years, a period of time that he later described as "the happiest days of my life" (Selbstdarstellung, p. 46). It was here that he rose to honours, that his children went to university, and where the Bresslaus became important members of society.

All of this changed within a few days of the French occupation of Alsace-Lorraine on December 1 1918, when Prof. Bresslau was expelled from Strasbourg as a „pangermaniste militante“. As a deported German, he was only allowed to take 40 kg of baggage with him. Although he had certainly not expected to be thrown out, he had fortunately had the foresight to send the work dossiers of the MGH sections Scriptores and Diplomata, which had been stored in Strasbourg, along with his own personal research materials and his unfinished manuscript of the history of the MGH, to Berlin in autumn 1918.

Harry Bresslau and his wife went first to Hamburg where they were taken in by Harry’s sister. During their stay there, Bresslau received the letter on exhibit from Robert Holtzmann. Holtzmann, 25 years his junior, was a former student and had worked under his guidance at the MGH in the section Diplomata. After completing his post-doctoral thesis in medieval and modern history at the University of Strasbourg, Holtzmann went on to become professor in Gießen, was drafted to two years of military service in the war, and returned to academia with a professorship in Breslau (Wroclaw) in 1916. Writing in February 1919, he invited the Bresslaus to join him in Breslau, offering his former mentor an honorary professorship at the university. In the end, however, Harry Bresslau and his wife moved to Heidelberg in October 1919 where Bresslau, now 71 years old, dedicated most of his time to working for the MGH.

Hochverehrter Herr Professor,

Oft habe ich in den letzten Wochen an Sie und Ihr Schicksal gedacht, und es drängt mich, heute mit einem Vorschlag an Sie heranzutreten. Sie haben nun ein langes reiches Leben im akademischen Kreise verbracht und empfinden es gewiss schwer, nun durch einen brutalen Gewaltakt auf die Straße gesetzt und ohne direkte Verbindung mit einer Universität zu sein. Deshalb möchte ich Ihnen den Vorschlag machen, Ihren Wohnsitz hierher zu verlegen. Ich glaube, versichern zu dürfen, dass die hiesige Fakultät es sich zur Ehre anrechnen würde, eine Honorar-Professur für Sie zu beantragen und Sie in ihrer Mitte begrüßen zu dürfen. Mir persönlich könnte natürlich nichts lieberes und nichts angenehmeres passieren, als auf diese Art wieder in nächste Beziehung zu Ihnen zu treten und Ihres Rates, wie ehedem, so auch in Zukunft teilhaftig zu sein. Bitte also ziehen Sie diese Angelegenheit einmal in wohl wollende (aber hoffentlich nicht allzu lange andauernde) Erwägung und sagen Sie bitte auch Ihrer Frau, dass meine Frau und ich uns sehr freuen würden, Sie hier begrüßen zu dürfen.

Noch eine Frage. Ich habe hier einen für quellenkritische Fragen recht begabten Schüler, der eine Dr.-Arbeit will. Würden Sie Bertold-Bernold empfehlen? Ekkehard? Ligurinus? Oder wäre eine Vorarbeit für die Monumenta zu machen?
