The work of a century

A letter from Ernst Heymann to Harry Bresslau, 25.05.1921

In 1919, the MGH were to celebrate the hundredth anniversary of their founding. Harry Bresslau had been commissioned by the central board of directors to write a history of the institution since its beginnings. He began work on this enormous undertaking in 1917 amid the daily difficulties of wartime life, sorting through mountains of archival material in order to live up to his own scholarly expectations. In 1918, he was still convinced that his work could be published on time for the 1919 anniversary, but developments towards the end of the war made this impossible. In the end, the book was to fill 700 pages and take six years to complete, during which time its author also performed his other duties for the MGH, discharged his war service, worried about his children, was deported, and went on the search for a new home.

Bresslau’s "Geschichte der MGH" is meticulously written and abounds in details from innumerable documents, many of which no longer exist. His account omits neither human failings and tragedies nor political intrigues, but at the same time never loses track of its guiding purpose: the presentation of the history of a „great national undertaking“. As he later wrote, „It was the greatest pleasure to me in this book to dispense with scholarly form and return to simply narrating how things really were“ (Selbstdarstellung, p. 71)

In his papers, Harry Bresslau preserved some of the written reactions to his history of the MGH, including the letter on exhibit from the jurist Ernst Heymann, a fellow member of the central board of directors and head of the section Leges. Heymann’s response underscores the importance of Bresslau’s book and his appreciation of its author‘s achievement.

Modern readers may find the work somewhat hard to digest on account of its sheer volume, the wealth of details, and in particular because its composition requires an in-depth knowledge of the institutional structures to properly understand. At the same time, it is undoubtedly a priceless treasure for the history of medieval research.

Hochverehrter Herr Kollege!

In den Pfingsttagen ist es mir endlich möglich gewesen, inmitten des Stroms einer geradezu uferlosen Tätigkeit in Ihrer schönen Geschichte der Monumenta ruhig zu lesen, und ich möchte doch nicht versäumen, Ihnen für den großen Genuß den herzlichsten Dank zu sagen. Der überaus spröde Stoff ist zu prachtvoller Anschauung gebracht und würdevoll leben die großen Persönlichkeiten auf, die an dem Werke mitgearbeitet und das Werk beeinflußt haben. Mit tiefen Schmerzen wird man erfüllt, wenn man die Zeiten des Auflebens Deutschlands am Anfange des 19. Jahrhunderts in ihrer Einfachheit und Seelenfülle vor sich sieht und dann den Aufstieg der deutschen Wissenschaft, wie er von dem Aufblühen des Vaterlandes getragen wurde, in Ihrer schlichten und herzergeifenden Darstellung verfolgt. Wir können stolz sein, daß einer unserer ersten Geschichtsprofessoren den Monumenta und der deutschen Wissenschaft dieses Werk trotz allem Schweren der Zeit geschenkt hat, geschafft hat, selbst vertrieben und in allen seinen politischen Lehrhoffnungen enttäuscht! Ihr Buch, das ja bei der Benutzung der Monumenta Jedem unschätzbare Dienste leisten wird, ist weit darüber hinaus zu einem Meisterwerk deutscher Geschichtsschreibung geworden. Seien Sie sicher, daß ich, solange meine sehr bescheidene Mithilfe bei den Monumenta dauert, das was ich aus Ihrem Buch gelernt habe – und es ist viel – auch für diese nützen werde. Ich hänge innerlich mit viel größerem Hingeben an den Aufgaben der Unternehmung, als das infolge meiner so disparaten und mich so oft unerfreulich belastenden Tätigkeit äußerlich in die Erscheinung tritt. Ihnen, hochverehrter Herr Kollege, möchte ich bei dieser Gelegenheit aber einmal meine hohe Verehrung ausdrücken, die nicht nur dem großen Gelehrten, sondern besonders auch dem Mann gilt.
