The saviour of Gregory of Tours

A letter from Paul Fridolin Kehr to Wilhelm Levison, 19.06.1935

„I have served the ‚sanctus amor patriae‘ with four quarto volumes and three octavo volumes of editions, not to mention the other incidental tasks I have undertaken for other sections of the Monumenta Germaniae in my over 21 years of permanent employment. I hope that you will understand that, after so many editions and Latin introductions, I have the wish to write something of a more elevated style.“ With these words, Wilhelm Levison firmly turned down Paul Kehr's request to undertake further editions for the MGH. He concluded his response in a more conciliatory tone, however, thanking Kehr for the honour of the request and not quite closing the door on later work for the MGH (MGH-Archiv 338/201, 23.2.1920).

15 years later, he was indeed to spring into the breech to assist his old mentor, Bruno Krusch, who at the age of 78 was planning a revised publication of his 1884 edition of the Historia Francorum by Gregory of Tours. This was a great relief to Paul Kehr who, as head of the restructured MGH, now a National-Socialist Reichsinstitut, still had the responsibility for the edition projects. He greeted Levison’s consent to assist Krusch with words of thankfulness and respect for his Jewish colleague.

Levison responded candidly that he found himself unable to turn down Krusch’s request for help on the edition of Gregory of Tours, principally on the grounds of his sense of duty, „for it will be joyless labour that hinders me in my other wishes and I will have little to show for it in the end. But considering that Krusch’s sight is obviously worsening, such that his latest work contains utterly distorted misreadings, I believe that I am obliged by my own feelings of thankfulness to him and by the „sanctus amor patriae“ in general to put my personal wishes aside“ (MGH-Archiv B 556, Blatt 33, 20.6.1935).

In his last yearly report in 1936, Paul Kehr underlined Wilhelm Levison’s importance for the MGH, emphasising that Krusch was „a physical wreck and almost blind“, leaving Levison to shoulder the entire work and responsibility for the project as „the last living expert for the Merovingian Age“ (MGH-Archiv B 536, unveröffentlichter Jahresbericht 1935 von Paul Kehr, Blatt 18). This part of the report, however, was suppressed by Kehr’s successor, Wilhelm Engel. From 1936 onwards, the name Wilhelm Levison disappeared entirely from the yearly reports published by the „Reichsinstitut für ältere deutsche Geschichtskunde" (Monumenta Germaniae Historica).

Hochverehrter Herr Kollege,

ich wollte Ihnen immer schon schreiben, aber bei dem Hin und Her meines Daseins oder Nichtdaseins und der Flut der Geschäfte und Schreibereien hab ichs immer vertagt. Ich glaubte auch dass Sie mich hinreichend kennen, um zu wissen, dass nichts meine Verehrung für Sie und meine Hochachtung für Ihre Wissenschaft und Lehrverdienste erschüttern oder mindern kann. Etwas Positives konnte ich freilich bisher nicht schreiben; erst jetzt fängt eine gewisse Klärung an einzusetzen. Die Hauptsache war mir die M[onumenta] G[ermaniae] aus dem grossen Sturm herauszubringen und da war mir Eckhardt, den ich zu meinem Nachfolger vorschlug, eine grosse Hilfe, dem wir alle Dank schulden. Wir wären vielleicht sonst der Mythologie verfallen.

Zunächst bin ich mit allen Vollmachten bis 31/III 36 kommissarisch beauftragt.

Eben schreibt mir Krusch, dass er Mitte Juli den Druck des Gregors beginne und dass Sie sich bereit erklärt hätten, die Korrektur zu lesen. Mir fällt damit ein Felsblock vom Herzen. Ich weiß nicht, was Sie von Kruschs jüngsten Aufsätzen denken: mir aber ist bei seiner offenbar zunehmenden Erblindung schwül zu Mute und ich fürchtete schon, dass alle auf die Lex Salica und den Gregor verwandte Mühe und Geld pro nihilo gewesen sei. Sie erwerben sich also um die Mon[umenta] Germ[aniae] noch einmal ein grosses Verdienst, vielleicht, wie ich hoffe, sogar das grösste, wenn Sie die Krusche Ladung in den Hafen bringen. Kann ich sonst helfen, wird’s an mir nicht fehlen.
