A letter from Willhelm Levison to Edmund Ernst Stengel, 21.05.1939; Stengel's written response to Levison, 19.06.1939

In 1935, the MGH were transformed into a „Reichsinstitut“ and as such subordinated to the Reichsministerium für Wissenschaft, Erziehung und Volksbildung (the Reich ministry for science, education, and national culture). Their new mission was to legitimate „new Germany“ through their research on medieval historical sources. A central feature of NS politics was the expulsion of Jews. The employment of Jews in a Nazi „Reichsinstitut“ therefore contradicted both the regime’s ideology and the racist laws it had passed. This put Edmund Ernst Stengel, president of the „Reichsinstitut“ since 1937, in a serious dilemma. On the one hand, he was legally bound to end the employment of Jews and, beyond mere compliance with the law, he most probably also identified himself closely with NS racial ideology. On the other hand, he was dependent on the work of Wilhelm Levison, a Jew, to realise his ambitious plans. As a solution, Stengel reached an agreement with Walter Holtzmann, Levison’s successor as professor in Bonn, in autumn 1938. Holtzmann, who was himself a member of the S.A. but nevertheless maintained contact with his former colleague, agreed to grant Levison access to the Bonn university library so that he might continue his work for the MGH (MGH-Archiv B 567, Blatt 291).

After his move to Durham, Wilhelm Levison remained in contact with Edmund Stengel. The letter card on display from May 1939 is probably the first post that he sent from his house at Victoria Terrace 4, Durham. The reference to an earlier postal address, „as previously to Bertram Colgrave, M.A., 56 South Street“, indicates that Stengel must already have written to Levison in England prior to 21 May 1939. Levison was well-known for his considerateness for the needs of others. In this letter, he, a Jewish exile, politely addresses his Aryan counterpart, Stengel, as his „highly esteemed colleague“, signs with his initials, and takes up the thread of his work for the „Reichsinstitut“ without a word of reproach.

In his reply, Edmund Stengel reiterates his request that Levison conceal his work for the MGH under a cloak of absolute secrecy. There was much for him to do with the completion of the introduction and the index for the edition of Gregory of Tours' Historia Francorum and the re-working of Bruno Krusch’s Lex Salica edition. Altogether, Stengel had every reason to be satisfied with the situation: His Jewish employee had left Germany, just as the regime wished, and at the same time he covertly continued working for him.

Hochverehrter Herr Kollege,
Nachdem alle Schwierigkeiten der Übersiedlung glücklich überwunden sind, wir auch ein neues Heim in dieser landschaftlich und geschichtlich reizvollen kleinen Stadt beziehen konnten, habe ich die Arbeit am Gregor von Tours wieder aufgenommen, die unter der so vielfältigen anderen Anforderungen der letzten Monate sehr zu wünschen übrig ließ. Die Arbeit an dem Register ist jetzt im vollen Gange und soll möglichst schnell zum Abschluß gebracht werden; die teilweise schon bearbeitete Einleitung mache ich dann fertig, während die Druckerei mit dem Register beschäftigt ist.
Seit kurzem bin ich hier Honorary Fellow der Universität ohne andere Verpflichtungen als die wissenschaftlicher Arbeit.

Sehr verehrter Herr Kollege!

Die Antwort auf Ihre Karte vom 21. Mai blieb länger unerledigt, da ich sie mit dem nun gleichzeitig abgehenden Sonderdruck begleiten wollte, der erst jetzt in meine Hände kam; ich hoffe, daß Sie Einiges darin, namentlich die frühmittelalterlichen Abschnitte (Vita Columbae!) interessieren wird. Ich freue mich, daß das Register bald fertig ist (es ist dann direkt an die Druckerei zu schicken). Die Arbeit bitte ich nach wie vor streng vertraulich zu behandeln, vor Allem aber darf von der Lex außer R. in God. und Ihrer Gattin, der ich mich zu empfehlen bitte, Niemand wissen! Ich wäre Ihnen dankbar, wenn Sie mir auch von dieser Arbeit, an die Sie hoffentlich auch demnächst herantreten werden, gelegentlich berichten würden. Möchten Sie auch fernerhin in Ihrem neuen Heim voll zufrieden sein!
