A letter from Henry Simonsfeld to Georg Waitz, 01.04.1878

From autumn 1870 onwards, Henry Simonsfeld lived with his mother Sophie in Munich in a comfortable flat in the fourth floor of a building with a first-class address: Maximilianstraße 40. It was there in June 1877 that he received a letter from Georg Waitz offering him a position at the MGH as editor for Italian source material. Having written his doctoral thesis on Venetian historiography, Simonsfeld was well qualified for this work. He soon found himself being offered not only the edition of the oldest texts of Venetian history writing („Chronicon Altinate"), but also a position as „Hülfsarbeiter“ (assistant editor) at the MGH. In comparison with the prospect of a civil service career in the state library, which Simonsfeld was then hoping for, the conditions of work at the MGH must not have appeared very attractive: it would have been an untenured and time consuming position for which he would have had to move to Berlin.

His plans to complete his post-doctoral habilitation and his mother’s reluctance to leave Munich were probably the main reasons for Simonsfeld‘s decision to write in the letter on display dated to April 1 1878, politely turning down Waitz’s offer. In the same year he submitted a few chapters from his study on the „Chronicon Altinate“ as his habilitation thesis at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich and attained his qualification to teach as an unsalaried lecturer. Nevertheless, Simonsfeld continued to work actively for the Monumenta on a freelance basis. With a collection of some 70 handwritten letters, the MGH archive is the largest single repository of archival material on Henry Simonsfeld and his life.

Hochverehrter Herr Geh[eimer] Reg[ierungs]-Rath!

So schwer es mir wird, muß ich nun doch Ihnen, hochverehrter Herr Geh[eimer]-Rath, meinen Entschluß in der bewußten Angelegenheit mittheilen, den ich, wie ich wohl versichern darf, nicht mit leichtem Herzen gefaßt habe. Denn welchen Werth es haben muß, unter Ihrer unmittelbaren Leitung zu arbeiten, und welche Aussichten ich mir damit möglicherweise verschließe, weiß ich wohl. Aber aus Gründen, welche hauptsächlich in persönlichen Verhältnissen liegen, mit deren Darlegung ich Sie heute nicht belästigen will, sehe ich mich veranlaßt, auf das ehrenvolle Anerbieten für jetzt nicht einzugehen, und gedenke mich, sobald ich die Arbeit über das Chron[icon] Altinate beendet haben werde, doch hier zu habilitieren.

Setzte der von Euer Hochwohlgeboren mitgetheilte Wortlaut des Vertrages nicht fest, daß die ständigen Mitarbeiter an dem Wohnsitze des Leiters der Abtheilung ihren Aufenthalt zu nehmen haben, so würde ich mir die Frage erlauben, ob es denn nicht möglich sei, daneben hier – etwa mit der Verpflichtung eines zeitweisen Aufenthaltes in Berlin und vielleicht auch gegen einen geringeren Gehalt – als Mitarbeiter einzutreten. Jedenfalls aber bin ich bereit, wie das Chron[icon] Alt[inate], später eventuell noch andere, insbesondere italienische Quellen für die Monumenta zu übernehmen.

Indem ich hoffe, daß Sie, hochverehrter Herr Geh[eimer]-Rath, mir trotz meiner ablehnenden Antwort, wie bisher, auch ferner Ihr gütiges Wohlwollen bewahren werden, bleibe ich mit vorzüglicher Hochachtung
